Rank launches DCMS Covid-19 Response Programme

November 10, 2020 by Natalie

Last week, The Rank Foundation launched the brand new DCMS Covid-19 Response Programme to the Rank Network (RankNet).

The Rank Foundation is one of nineteen funders, foundations and philanthropists who are partnering with the Government’s Community Match Challenge scheme through the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The programme is split into two strands: the Covid-19 Recovery Fund and the Covid-19 Time to Shine Leadership Programme.

These two funds will be exclusively open to RankNet member organisations*.

The Covid-19 Recovery Fund has been designed to support RankNet charities and social enterprises with urgent and immediate financial needs as a result of the pandemic.  This can include (but is not limited to) staff salaries, project running costs, general running costs and overheads, and goods and equipment which would not be capitalised.

The Covid-19 Time to Shine Leadership Programme has been designed to expand the already very popular Time to Shine programme between November 2020 and December 2022.  In the past, organisations have been invited to apply for the programme, however we are opening applications to RankNet member organisations*.

*In line with DCMS conditions and taking into consideration that there are nearly 1,000 members of RankNet, The Rank Foundation has outlined some key organisation criteria which should be adhered to when applying for either (or both) of these funding streams. We urge applicants to read more about the Covid-19 Recovery Fund and the Covid-19 Time to Shine Leadership Programme prior to making an application.

As an organisation, we are delighted to be able to offer this extended funding opportunity to RankNet member organisations during such a trying and difficult time for the Third Sector. If you are unable to find an answer to any questions using the links above, please email communitymatchchallenge@rankfoundation.com and someone will get back to you within 7 working days.

RankNet Members can apply for the Covid-19 Recovery Fund and the Covid-19 Time to Shine Leadership Programme under ‘Opportunities’ on RankNet.

The Rank Foundation to benefit from DCMS funding scheme

September 30, 2020 by Natalie

The Rank Foundation is to benefit from the government’s DCMS £85 million Covid charity match-funding scheme.

The Rank Foundation is one of nineteen funders, foundations and philanthropists who are partnering with the Government’s Community Match Challenge scheme. The fund is part of the £750 million package of support announced by the Chancellor to support the sector.  The Rank Foundation has been awarded £5 million.

The Rank Foundation will create a new programme, the Time to Shine Covid-19 Resilience Programme, and will distribute a total of £10 million to small and medium-sized charities and social enterprises, primarily to those within their network, RankNet.

The new grants programme will support 200 charities and social enterprises with urgent and immediate financial needs.  Those organisations that are facing unprecedented demand for services or those that are facing a significant reduction income as a result of the pandemic, will benefit from the programme.  In addition, 200 charities and social enterprises will take part in the Time to Shine Leadership Programme, creating new, meaningful jobs when the social sector needs them most.

Time to Shine is a UK wide leadership programme that is run by the Rank Foundation, supported in partnership with the National Lottery Community Fund and working with the social sector, where a strong emphasis is placed on personal and professional development. It is designed to address the following:

  • A specific organisational development need, working with a charity or social enterprise.
  • To enable a Time to Shine Leader with the right skills mix, talent, and work ethic, who is currently under-employed to experience a 12-month full-time paid position within a supportive social sector work environment.
  • To provide an opportunity for talented people to consider the social sector as a career of first choice.

Caroline Broadhurst, Deputy CEO of the Rank Foundation stated, ‘we are delighted to be part of this collaborative approach to build resilience within the social sector, in the face of the pandemic.  The dual offer of immediate, short-term and urgent grant funding, combined with an investment in the social sector leaders of tomorrow, through the Time to Shine Programme, will help create the best conditions for charities and social enterprises to not only survive but thrive beyond 2020.’

Handling Covid19 – Kissing it Better

May 1, 2020 by Natalie

We caught up with Kissing it Better, a charity who became members of the network back in 2017 due to their Major Grant. They have subsequently had a Time to Shine Leader, Hannah, who is in the middle of her employment year with them.

Simply, Kissing it Better’s mission is ‘to end the isolation of old age by bringing the generations together.’ There is a key team of 5, with 7 additional self-employed team members. The main bulk of people at Kissing it Better are the fantastic volunteers from schools, colleges, universities, and teachers, as well as musicians. There are around 800 of them!

Ordinarily, Kissing it Better has contracts with large hospital Trusts. They also work with care home groups and those in the community. Some of that work is funded by local councils as well as other funding groups and individuals who donate money to the organisation, either directly or through fundraising activities.

Kissing it Better are also starting to teach students in secondary schools, colleges, universities and those completing ‘Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards’ about their work through a regulated and accredited course called ‘Creative Thoughtfulness in the Care of Others’. They also run workshops for primary school children called “When great granny came to stay’, to teach them how best to engage with their older relatives, neighbours and friends.

Those who sing or offer other performances that demonstrate their skills (drama, dance, magic skills, hairdressing, beauty therapy etc.,) are learning how to adapt a performance or experience for those who may have dementia, hearing loss or poor sight. In return, Kissing it Better will offer master classes on how to work in challenging environments, train them in dementia awareness, write references for them.

During this pandemic, Kissing it Better has had to adapt its services to facilitate social distancing and the ensure the safety of their staff and service users: from making regular phone calls to elderly service users, to making goodie-bags for hospital and care staff. One of their adapted activities has received a lot of publicity. This is their ‘outside the window’ campaign – an initiative that enables Kissing it Better to continue to bring music and other gentle entertainment to those isolated in care homes and hospitals by performing at a safe distance outside their windows.

They are also working with The Duke of Edinburgh Award to enable students to continue their volunteering experience by connecting them with older people in the community, by giving them ways to continue that connection from their own homes.

We asked them how their service users were responding:

“We work with older people in hospitals and care homes and many are feeling so lost and alone at this time. Unable to see their relatives and friends, we believe they are not just thrilled to get some gentle entertainment, they are also touched that someone took time out their busy lives to think of them”

How to contact KIB or get more information.

The best way to contact KIB is by emailing mail@kissingitbetter.co.uk or by calling 07831 136152 or 01789 488018

You can visit their website here.

Rank Conference 2019: Valuing Place

October 23, 2019 by Natalie

On October 9th-10th, The Rank Foundation hosted the annual conference at the fantastic Queens Hotel in Leeds.

Every year the Foundation brings together beneficiary organisations, Time to Shine Leaders, Rank Aspire members, RankNet members and external funders and guests to a 2-day themed conference where delegates get the chance to participate in tailored seminars, the annual Accelerator Event, networking opportunities and celebratory showcases. This is the biggest event of the year for the Foundation, and we are always excited to share the amazing work of Leaders in our network.

This year, the theme of the conference was Valuing Place: Creating Collaborative Change. Earlier this year, the Foundation released a Valuing Place report focusing on the successes (and lessons learned) of Place-Based funding in Hull, Dundee and Plymouth. Building on this, it felt apt to spend two days with the network looking at how Place affects our communities, and how best to make every opportunity count. We had 250 delegates join us in Leeds, including seminar leaders, performers, key note speakers, judges and panellists.

We would like to thank all delegates for their participation at what we feel is our most successful conference to date, with an extra special thank you to members of the network who helped the team deliver the conference content by running seminars, acting as judges and panellists, and sharing their stories with attendees.

You can take a look at photographs of the event on our conference page here.

Press Release: The Rank Foundation receives £3.3m grant to expand Time to Shine

August 6, 2019 by Natalie

The Time to Shine programme is empowering future leaders in the social sector

The Rank Foundation, a charitable trust that promotes leadership development and enterprise within the social sector, is celebrating today after being awarded £3.3 million from The National Lottery Community Fund to support the expansion of its successful ‘Time to Shine’ programme.

Time to Shine provides paid opportunities within the charity sector for people experiencing underemployment, while simultaneously addressing gaps in skills and capacity both within individual charities and the wider social sector.

The National Lottery funding will enable the programme to roll out across the UK, increasing the number of individuals and organisations eligible for the programme and allowing it to be better tailored to specific operational and business development challenges faced by small and medium-sized charities.

Caroline Broadhurst, Deputy CEO at The Rank Foundation, said:“Our partnership with The National Lottery Community Fund is a great boost for the Time to Shine Leadership Programme. The Rank Foundation and the Fund share a passion for bringing new talent and skills into the social sector, whilst future-proofing the role of small and medium-sized charities. This grant will help to scale Time to Shine across the UK with a wider reach than ever before.”

The Rank Foundation was first supported by National Lottery funding for its Time to Shine programme back in 2016, which was initially delivered across Northern Ireland. To date, dozens of leaders have been supported to both reach their potential and to be effective in their work placements. One leader, placed in a Belfast charity, raised £800,000 in her Time to Shine year, turning around the fortunes of the organisation – and has since started a master’s degree, while continuing to work for the charity.

Joe Ferns, UK Director at The National Lottery Community Fund, said: “We are delighted that National Lottery funding is continuing to support The Rank Foundation’s Time to Shine programme, which helps those experiencing underemployment to find meaningful, secure work – alongside filling important skills and capacity gaps both within charities and the wider voluntary sector.”

“Now, thanks to National Lottery players, the programme will reach more people and organisations right across the UK, increasing its impact and enabling more communities to thrive.”
