HEY100 Leadership Programme
HEY100 was a free leadership and management development series in Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY). It brought together over 100 leaders from across the area to boost the leadership network that had emerged through Rank’s long-term investment in Hull.
Rank partnered with Clore Social Leadership because we both wanted to create something that was owned by local people, connected to local needs, and added long-term value.
Hey100 combined our commitment to place-based funding with Clore’s leadership development programmes and merged them with ideas about place and leadership from the other funders: Big Lottery (now National Lottery Community Fund), Arts Council England and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (UK branch).
The programme built on the network Rank’s long-term place-based work in Hull had created.
About HEY100
Hey100 was developed with a local steering group of arts and social sector leaders and was wholly focused on the needs of their communities. We also employed a local leader, who had a passion and understanding for the city to act as a conduit between Rank and the local leaders.
Initially intended for 100 people, Hey100 united over 160 leaders from charities, social enterprises, community businesses, and arts organisations. It focused on leadership styles needed to succeed when demand is high, and resources are low.
The intention of working with such a large group in one place was not only to instil individual confidence but to inspire, connect and encourage collaboration among people from across sectors, disciplines and levels of the social sector.
Clore Social Leadership trained participants across five strands: Senior Leaders; Emerging Leaders; New to Management; Trustees; and Community Leaders.
The impact of HEY100
"With the right leadership, even a small charity will change the world."
Rank and Clore’s partnership programme had a profound impact on the participants who learnt about themselves and their own potential. Harriett Johnson from Absolutely Cultured said:
"I've had a profound, life-changing impact from this. I've learnt so much about myself; it's been quite frightening."
HEY100 encouraged a culture of sharing across the city and boosted collaborative working to create an enduring ripple of impact from Rank’s original investment.
The place-based approach helped unlock the assets, resources and skills that existed in Hull. Hey100 connected people who wouldn't necessarily have come together to find synergies and create capacity for their city.
The legacy
Hey100 created a lasting ripple of impact from Rank’s original investment.
It sparked a demand for further leadership training opportunities. Participants who had committed to giving back remained true to their word, by supporting the subsequent programme, ‘Confident Futures’.
Confident Futures built upon the foundations laid by HEY100 and continues to enrich the sector to ensure a lasting legacy of impactful leadership in Hull and East Yorkshire.
For more information about HEY100 you can read an independent evaluation, which showed that a place-based leadership programme, such as HEY100, can build a sense of purpose across a city or region by galvanising leaders around shared goals.
