The Rank Foundation – University of St Andrews Summer School 2026
27 Jul 2026 / Nhung Phung
What a fantastic week we had at this year’s The Rank Foundation – University of St Andrews Summer School with the 14 young leaders from our School Leadership Award Class of 2025!
Throughout the week, the students took part in a wide range of interactive sessions on leadership, philanthropy, entrepreneurship and creativity, led by Professor Tobias Jung, academic and professional services staff from St Andrews Business School, and leaders from some of Dundee’s charities and social enterprises: Dundee Bairns, NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation, Uppertunity, Braw Tea Cafe, Dundee United Community Trust, Street Soccer Scotland, and Kanzen for Life.

Here is what the students had to say:
“The St Andrews placement that we took part in was both very enjoyable and informative at the same time (Jesse). My time at St Andrews was more than what I was expecting. It was a week packed with excitement, learning, and also some challenges (Paige). We were fortunate enough to participate in very engaging and inspirational lessons on enterprise, philanthropy and leadership, which were given by very experienced and wise lecturers (Amelia). It gave me a better understanding of leadership, philanthropy and enterprise through engaging sessions and discussions (Reyan).
I have learned how leaders create a positive environment for others and work together to achieve their goals (Harshini). I learnt a lot about the creative skills and the constant innovation and adaptation that is needed to be a successful leader (Ethan). The overarching theme I learnt from this venture was that leadership is about serving others rather than yourself and great leaders will always be gracious (Caoimhin). The experience helped me think differently about leadership and recognise how leadership can be used to create a positive change (Alfie).
I particularly found the day we went to Dundee very enlightening, as we met with charities and not only learnt about how they fundraise and manage their organisations, but also the origin and passion behind why they were created- for me, this was very inspiring and moving to learn about (Marli).
I would say this placement has improved my communication, listening and teamwork skills (Kayla). I would also like to note the amazing place it [St Andrews] actually is, and my entire stay has been not just enlightening but immensely enjoyable as well (Rowan). Although I was expecting to come mainly for a tour of the town ahead of UCAS applications, the lectures on philanthropy organised by Professor Jung have definitely surpassed my expectations – I guess you could say my mindset has been transformed! (Jonathan).”

A huge thank you to this year’s cohort of students for their enthusiasm and engagement throughout the week, to the Rank colleagues who accompanied them, to every organisation and speaker who generously gave their time, and to the team at the University of St Andrews for helping make the Summer School such a success.
