Interview with James McBride, Rank Aspire Programme 2025 Participant

The Rank Aspire Programme (RAP) invests in young people with the potential to grow as leaders in their communities. Since launching in September 2025, the cohort has been building confidence, skills, and connections through shared experiences. We recently caught up with James McBride to hear about his experience so far.

Q: What did you get up to on the programme?

A: Starting the Rank Aspire Programme has been an amazing experience. Travelling to Leeds and meeting so many inspiring people across the network was a real highlight. We explored confidence, team building, leadership, and building connections, with some really fun icebreakers along the way. One standout session for me was Communicating with Confidence with Claudette, which was incredibly valuable.

Our second residential in the Lake District was just as memorable, with amazing views and more opportunities to grow together as a group. We continued to build our confidence and leadership skills, while strengthening our connections. One of the highlights was climbing inside a slate mine, which was a brilliant challenge, even if we did get caught in a hailstorm.

Q: How did you feel along the way?

A: I felt a bit nervous at first, but I enjoy meeting new people and quickly felt at ease. As soon as I met everyone, it was grand. I’ve loved being part of the group, doing so many fun things while learning at the same time. I genuinely loved it throughout.

Everyone was amazing, and during the second residential in the Lake District it was a wonderful feeling getting closer to people and seeing others come out of their shells. It’s a truly great group and a fantastic experience to be part of.

Q: What have you learned from the experience?

A: I’ve learned a lot during my time with Rank, including that accents can sometimes make things tricky. I’ve also learned more about myself. I’ve developed my confidence, learned how to use feedback in my work and life, and understood the importance of building strong relationships. I’ve also been reminded how important it is to look after yourself.

Good group agreements definitely inspired a lot of icebreakers. One of the biggest takeaways for me has been leadership: how to lead, deliver sessions, and carry that confidence forward.

Most of all, I’ve seen how people from different backgrounds across the UK can come together and thrive with a shared goal. It’s been a fantastic experience and one I’ve really enjoyed being part of.
