What is the Covid19 Time to Shine Programme?

The Rank Foundation is one of nineteen funders, foundations and philanthropists who are partnering with the Government’s Community Match Challenge scheme.

The matched funding element is allowing for the Foundation to significantly scale the Time to Shine Leadership programme. Between November 2020 and December 2022, we will recruit and place 200 Time to Shine leaders, bringing fresh skills and talent to the social sector, to help future-proof its role throughout and beyond the pandemic.

Time to Shine is a leadership programme established by The Rank Foundation and is currently in its tenth year of operation. The purpose of Time to Shine is twofold:

  • To enable individuals with the right skills mix, talent and work ethic, the opportunity to experience a 12- month paid leadership and development placement in a charity
  • To fill organisational, developmental and skills gaps in smaller charities by identifying a specific piece of work that can be completed in 12-months

The programme aims to develop capacity and bring about sustainable improvements to the charity’s performance whilst boosting employment prospects and building interest in career opportunities within the social sector.

Important Considerations

  • Organisations from within the Rank network (RankNet) are invited to apply. On this occasion, prospective organisations should either be currently in receipt of Rank funding or previously in receipt of Rank funding. Applications from organisations not previously funded by The Rank Foundation will be considered on the proviso that they hold RankNet memberships.
  • New organisations will only be invited to apply when recommended directly by a Rank Executive. This is a rare exception.
  • There will be no public application form. All applications will be made via our RankNet platform.
  • In line with DCMS requirements, funding is exclusively for organisations based in England at this time.
  • The first programme cohort will be January 2021 (please note this cohort has already been recruited for). Applications for March 2021 start will open on 06/11/2020
  • If your organisation is employing a Time to Shine leader in the January 2021 cohort, you are not eligible to apply for another leader until January 2022.
  • If your application is successful, you will be required to adopt Upshot.  Upshot is a monitoring and evaluation tool that all successful applicants will be required to complete throughout the duration of the grant period.  On-line training will be provided.
  • Prior to applying, we would recommend that you read and agree to the application Terms and Conditions.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a registered Charity, CIC, CIO or CBS.
  • Must be a member of our Rank Network (with the rare exception outlined above in ‘Important Considerations’).
  • Must be based in England. This is a criteria laid out by our DCMS grant. Non-England organisations can apply but please note geographical location will be taken into consideration when deciding on grant distribution.

Can I apply for this funding if I applied for Time to Shine 2021?2020-10-27T10:48:30+00:00

If your application for January 2021 was successful, you are not eligible to apply for March/April 2021. One year must pass between Time to Shine recruitment. If your application for January 2021 was unsuccessful, you are eligible to apply for the March/April 2021 cohort, however the candidate and project must be different to the original application.

My organisation is not a member of the Rank Network. Can I apply?2020-10-27T11:17:15+00:00

No. This is exclusively for member organisations of RankNet.

My organisation is a member of the network but has not signed up to RankNet. Can we apply?2020-10-27T11:19:03+00:00

All Time to Shine applications are via the RankNet members platform. If you think you are eligible for membership and require a login, please email ranknet@rankfoundation.com to enquire or check our RankNet membership Policy.

My organisation is eligible for Time to Shine, however the relevant member of staff (Development Manager, for example) is not a member of RankNet as they have not been involved with the previously Rank-funded project. How can they access the application form?2020-10-27T11:19:33+00:00

They will need to apply via a current RankNet member at their organisation. If in doubt, please contact ranknet@rankfoundation.com.

My organisation received a Pebble Grant. Can I apply for a Time to Shine Leader?2020-10-27T11:28:10+00:00

Unfortunately, Pebble Grant recipients are not eligible for RankNet membership, therefore are not eligible for the Time to Shine Leadership programme.

DCMS will contribute to the following start dates: March 2021 and January 2022, therefore this will not be the only opportunity to apply. The Time to Shine Leadership Programme will continue after this funding period, however we cannot guarantee the number of placements per year.
